Her first name when she was born was Barbara Alexander. Her father was Ben Howes Alexander, while her mother was Isabelle Oxley. Additionally, he describes the town she was born in as “a bustling, brawling, blue-collar mining town.
In an interview on C-SPAN, she identified her parents as “strong union people” with two family rules: “never cross a picket line and also never vote Republican.” Her father was a copper miner, and he went to the Montana School of Mines and later to Carnegie Mellon University. Barbara did not pursue her career in science after studying and completing her doctorate; instead, she worked as an analyst with the Bureau of the Budget in New York City and with the Health Policy Advisory Center, where she was later an assistant professor at the State University of New York at Old Westbury.
In 1972, Ehrenreich began co-teaching a course on women and health with feminist journalists, together with academic Deirdre English.
Furthermore, all over her career, Barbara worked as a freelance writer, and she is possibly best known for her non-fiction reportage, book reviews, and social commentary.
Barbara also served as founder, advisor, or board member to several organizations, such as the National Abortion Rights Action League, the U.S. National Women’s Health Network, the American Friends Service Committee, the Brooklyn-based Association for Union Democracy, political activist Robert Boehm’s Boehm Foundation, the National Mental Health Consumers’ Self-Help Clearinghouse, and the Campaign for America’s Future.
From 1979 to 1981. She serves as an adjunct associate professor at New York University. She also worked as a visiting professor at the University of Missouri at Columbia and Sangamon State University.
Later in 2000, Barbara validated the Presidential campaign of Ralph Nader; in 2004, she urged voters to support John Kerry in the swing states.
After that, in the year 2013, she became the honorary co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America, and on the NORML board of directors, the Institute for Policy Studies board of trustees, and also the editorial board of The Nation.
Ehrenreich did also serve on the editorial boards of Social Policy The New Press, Ms., Mother Jones, as a contributing editor to Harper’s and Seven Days, Lear’s
