Expanding his reach, Bob served as a national correspondent on NBC from 1991 to 1993, making regular appearances on The Today Show and NBC Nightly News. Throughout his career, he earned accolades such as the Meyer Berger Award for coverage of New York City and the American Society of Newspaper Editors award for distinguished newspaper writing.

On March 25th, 2011, Bob bid farewell to The New York Times, culminating his tenure with the piece “Losing Our Way.” Shortly after, in June 2011, he joined the national think tank Demos as a prominent Senior Fellow. Additionally, Bob authored his book “Losing Our Way” in 2014.
