Boulton had early roles at IPS News and the BBC. Before joining Sky News, he worked as a journalist in the parliamentary lobby. He was then political editor for TV-am, where his colleague was Kay Burley who later joined Sky News. He has written for newspapers and magazines including The Times, Sunday Times, Guardian, Spectator, New Statesman, and Independent.
Basically, that is how he began his journalism career this was after his graduation from school. His activeness has been from the 1980s till to date even though on 10 November 2021 he announced he will be leaving Sky News at the end of the year.
