In 2014, Powell did take on the lead role in the Italian drama film “Anita B.,” helmed by Roberto Faenza. Her portrayal earned her the prestigious Breakout Actress recognition at the 2014 Capri, Hollywood International Film Festival. However, The Hollywood Reporter did offer a contrasting opinion, criticizing her performance as “ineffective,” claiming that she struggled to effectively communicate the hardships her character had evidently endured.

In August 2016, Powell was chosen for the lead role in the television series “Siren” on Freeform. She portrayed Ryn, an untamed mermaid who arrives in a quaint coastal town in pursuit of her sister. To adequately prepare for the role, Powell delved into the lore surrounding mermaids and sea creatures.

“Siren” was proven to be a major success, becoming the highest-rated new cable drama in the spring of 2018. As a result, the series was then renewed for a second season in October and premiered on January 24, 2019.
