Elizabeth Smart is a famous American commentator for ABC News and a child safety activist. However, she did gain national attention at the age of fourteen. The attention came through when she was abducted from her home in Salt Lake City by Brian David Mitchell. Elizabeth was held captive for nine months by Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee until the police did rescue her from the street in Sandy, Utah. Since then Smart has been working as an activist and advocate for missing persons. In addition to that, Smart’s life and seizure have been the subject of numerous non-fiction books and films.

Kidnapping
At the age of fourteen in June 2002, Elizabeth was kidnapped at knife point from her bedroom when she was in her family’s house in Salt Lake City, Utah. So for the next 9 months, she went through a lot including, rape, being tied up, and also was threatened being killed if she tries to escape.
After all those harsh moments, it was fortunate she got rescued by the police officers in 2003 on the 12th of March on a public street in Sandy, Utah. The names of the suspects who kidnapped her were Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee, and they were recognized by witnesses.
In addition, Wanda Ileen pled guilty to assisting in kidnapping Smart as part of a plea bargain with prosecutors in 2002 on the 5th of June. Later in 2010 on the 19th of May, federal Judge Dale A. Kimball did sentence Wanda Ileen Barzee to 15 years in federal prison.
Furthermore, part of the plea deal was between the defense and federal prosecutors, He did give Wanda a credit for the seven years that she had already served. After that, the court did find Brian David capable to stand trial for kidnapping and sexual assault charges. Later Brian David Mitchell was found guilty on both counts and was sentenced in 2011 May to two life terms in federal prison.
Career
Elizabeth did establish the Elizabeth Smart Foundation in 2011, and it aims to work against human trafficking, and also to empower children to prevent sexual crime against children.
She did join ABC News as a commentator in 2011 on the 7th of July. So she has been coving about missing people. Ltaer in 2016 in September she did join NBC News as a correspondent and she did work for NBC’s TV programs such as Crime Watch Daily. Smart did focus on Women’s safety and working for a child.
