Barnes was born in Glasgow, Scotland, to his loving father Jim Swan and his beautiful mother Dorothy Swan. While growing up, his father was an alcoholic, and he and his siblings endured child abuse. Later, his dad and mother divorced, and later his mother got married to Reg Barnes, from whom Barnes took the name.
Moreover, in his family, he also has five other siblings, including Swanee, an Australian singer, Alan Barnes, Linda Barnes, Dorothy Barnes, and Lisa Barnes. About his education, Barnes dropped out of school at the age of sixteen to pursue music full time. However in 1974, Orange changed its name to Cold Chisel and began to develop a strong presence on the local music scene.
In September 1984, Jimmy released his first solo album called Bodyswerve was Number One on the Australian charts. In December 1985, Barnes released the second album, For the Working Class Man. Therefore, the second album debuted on the Australian national chart at No. 1 in December 1985 and remained at No. 1 for seven weeks.
Furthermore, during the television comedy, These New South Whales Barned was featured as the guest star, and the comedy was based on the Australian band. However, in 2021, Barnes announced that he had formed a rockabilly band alongside Slim Jim Phantom and Chris Cheney.
