Besides that, after he completed his college he joined and worked in the Army where he received remarkable distinctions such as Most Outstanding Scout, #1 Marksman with an M-16 rifle, and earning the Spirit and Honor Medal. He also joined the helicopter unit in the National Guard for flight operations. Ganahl was honored with induction into the Associated Press Broadcasting Hall of Fame which was held in 2009.
Further, during the 1980s, Ganahl devoted and committed his expertise to education, teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade science and math at St. Agatha School in Upper Arlington. Additionally, he did spend nine summers contributing to the OWjL program at Ohio Wesleyan University.
