Lupita Amondi Nyong’o(Lupita Nyong’o) is a Kenyan Mexican actress who is also the recipient of numerous accolades, including nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards a Tony Award, and an Academy Award. Besides that, she also supports historic preservation and she is good about preventing sexual harassment and working for women’s and animal rights.

Family | Parents

Lupita was born in Mexico City in Mexico to loving parents. She is the daughter of a Kenyan politician  Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, who is a college professor. Her mother is called Dorothy Ogada Buyu who is the managing director of the Africa Cancer Foundation and her own communications company.

However, Nyong’o holds dual citizenship which is Kenyan Mexican. In addition, she is of Luo descent on both sides of her family. There are six children in her family. 

Furthermore, when Lupita was born in Mexico her father was teaching in Mexico, however, she came back to Kenya and started living at the age of three. Her father was also once appointed as a professor at the University of Nairobi just after they came back to Kenya.

Nyong’o began her school at St Mary’s School in Nairobi, where she received  an IB Diploma in 2001. After that, she went on to join Hampshire College in the United States, where she graduated with a degree in film and theatre studies. 

Career

Lupita started her career working as part of the production crew for several films, including  Mira Nair’s The Namesake in 2006, Fernando Meirelles’s The Constant Gardener in 2005, and Salvatore Stabile’s Where God Left His Shoes in 2007.

She was inspired acting career by Ralph Fiennes, the British star of The Constant Gardener, and made her pursue a professional acting career.

After that, in 2008, the short film East River, which was directed by Marc Grey, cast Lupita Nyongo in a starring role which they shot in Brooklyn. Then when she came back to  Kenya that same year Lupita did appear in the Kenyan television series MTV Base Africa/UNICEF drama about HIV/AIDS prevention, and Shuga.

In 2015, Nyong’o returned to the stage with a starring role as an unnamed girl in the play Eclipsed, which was written by Danai Gurira. However, the play did take place during the chaos of the Second Liberian Civil War. So the film Public Theater became the fastest-selling new production in recent history and won Nyong’o an Obie Award for Outstanding Performance.

Then in 2016, Amondi co-starred in a live-action/CGI adaptation of its 1967 animated original, Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book in 2006, and voiced Raksha, a mother wolf who adopts Mowgli. Nyong’o reprised her acting role as Maz Kanata in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2007  as well as in the animated series Star Wars Forces of Destiny.

Also in 2019, Lupita narrated the Discovery Channel documentary series Serengeti, about wildlife in the Serengeti ecosystem. Therefore she did speak about the lack of African women narrating nature documentaries and also how the Serengeti team did encourage her to use her native Kenyan accent in the series.

In addition to that Nyong’o also guest-starred in Netflix’s adult-animated sitcom, Human Resources which was produced in 2022  as Asha, a Shame Wizard who became Lionel’s interest. Then after that Lupita reprised the role of Nakia in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the sequel to the original Black Panther film, which was released in November 2022.
