Shane and his fellow journalist we arrested by Iranian border guards after straying into Iran while allegedly hiking in northern Iraq near the Iranian border his other fellows were Joshua Fattal and Sarah Shourd and it was in the year 2009 in July.
Still, on that, the three Americans were put behind bars in prison in Iran on espionage charges for more than two years before their release in September 2011. After the incident of their arrest, they co-author a memoir of their experience (A Sliver of Light), as well as the cover story (“Kidnapped by Iran”) for the March–April 2014 issue of Mother Jones magazine.
In addition, Shane also did work as a Foreign Correspondent and he did reports from Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan, Chad, Syria, and Yemen. He also made an appearance in the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, Salon.com, Christian Science Monitor, and The New Yorker.
Furthermore, in the year 2015, Shane did work as an undercover journalist for Mother Jones while employed for six months as a prison guard at the Winn Correctional Center, which is a private prison in Winn Parish, Louisiana managed by the Corrections Corporation of America.
In 2016, Bauer took on another undercover news assignment for Mother Jones, penetrating Three Percent United Patriots, as a right-wing border militia in southern Arizona.
