While her mother Hiroe Nagase is Japanese, So her parents met her when her father was working as a streetcar conductor during the United States occupation of Japan after World War II, he was a United States Navy sailor.

Ann began her career as a broadcaster in 1978 just after her graduation from the University of Oregon as an intern at then NBC-affiliate KTVL in Medford, Oregon. She became the first female news reporter, but in 1980 she did move to NBC-affiliate KGW in Portland.

She joined NBC News in the year 1990, at first she was the NBC News Chicago correspondent then later the anchor of NBC News at Sunrise from 1991 to 1996. Ann also did serve as a substitute news anchor for Matt Lauer from 1994 to 1997 at Today.
